Parents Against Guns
As gun violence becomes more prevalent throughout the nation
and stories of incidents where children are harmed during the handling of
firearms are seen in the news, parents are beginning to take action. There are
multiple groups that are formed in order to rally behind the idea of
eliminating gun violence and urging for more action to be taken by the
government and other US citizens.
Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, an organization established by Shannon Watts, a stay-at-home-mom, is making a name for itself in the news. This organization was founded on December 15, 2012 as a response to the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. Moms Demand Action is fighting for more legislation to be enacted in order to prevent tragedies like Sandy Hook from happening. The members fight to prove a point in many different ways. They have created a series of ads, like the one depicted above, showing what the government deems as harmful to children. They use banned items, like books, dodgeball, and candy, in comparison to firearms to make a statement. The organization shows this drastic comparison to prove that these seemingly harmless objects are drawing more attention from the school officials and legislators than firearms are.
Anti-gun activist groups have also called out businesses, like Kroger’s and Target, for their support of openly carrying guns in their stores. On July 2, 2014, Target released a statement, in response to a 400,000 signature petition, saying that they “…request that guests not bring firearms to Target – even in communities where it is permitted by law… This is a complicated issue, but it boils down to a simple belief: Bringing firearms to Target creates an environment that is at odds with the family-friendly shopping and work experience we strive to create.” Parents against guns are striving to make a difference in any way that they can.
In addition to Moms Demand Action, there are many other organizations that have been established with similar views and goals. These “parents” against gun violence, use their relationship as a parent to draw attention to their calls to action. They picket and protest in order to convey the idea that a better environment to live in is needed. They have created possible solutions that they believe will help in accomplishing this goal such as empowering law enforcement, researchers, and mental health-care providers, issuing new regulations, and protecting schools. Parents don’t necessarily believe that guns should be banned completely, but they believe that the laws currently in place are not safe enough for their children.
